So today we call our Discover credit card company to see why our purchases don’t quite make it to the 5% “Cash Back” they constantly advertise.

First problem was that we had bought some items at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. Discover only pays ¼ (one-quarter) of one percent on anything bought at these stores. And they told us that it would be a good idea, NOT to buy at these stores if you want a cash back bonus!

We also asked about the 5% cash back we “Never” get to see. We were told that we could get 5% back on wedding gowns purchased between October first and January first. But since 98% of Wedding Gowns are bought between February first and May thirty-first… In this manner Discover won’t have to pay out if at all any 5% cash backs!

Our office decided it was time for a change and we went online and got a Capitol One Platnum card. We will tell you more about that when we begin to use it.

Memorial Day It Ain’t!

We prepared for Memorial Day 2008, by watching the news and cutting out coupons from the local papers. After all, what is Memorial Day in this new Century?

There were many really good deals from car dealerships because of the gas crisis. Dodge says you won’t have to pay more than $2.99 for gas over the next three years. All the others are worried about vehicles not getting at least 28 mpg. With the price of gas going up and the new cars coming out in September, if the dealers don’t move them now, they will just be a glut on the market.

The Mart stores had some really great swimwear and outdoor furniture sales, along with bar-b-que and lawn care equipment. But not one inch of space for an American Flag or a thought about our Servicemen and women.

The local news channels will have a few clips of local Veterans, BBC TV had the largest coverage and on Memorial Day Eve the TV Special from Washington, DC is the only thing close to actually paying homage to our Veterans.

Did the dictionary change the meaning for the word; “Memorial?” What is Memorial about a discount at the floor tile store?

What has Memorial Day become? A Super Sales Weekend? The best time to trade in that gas guzzler? A new set of sheets during the White? Sale. New garden tools?

Need A Notary?

As a Service Connected Veteran, there are some items you can order on-line within the new VA ordering system. The only catch is, you need to download and print out a form that has to be notarized at your local VA.

On Wednesday, April 23, 2008, we discovered another “Blocked” road for Veterans. At the Bay Pines VAMC, located near Saint Petersburg, FL we went to have our paperwork notarized.

The almost 400 acre campus has about 6,000 full and part time employees. There was only “One” person at this Medical Complex who is a notary. Of course she was out for the day.

No one at; Travel, Cashier, Release of Information, Pharmacy, Emergency Room, not even at the Administrator’s Office could one be found. The only one to have a notary license was in the ‘Patient Advocate’ office. However, when we got there prior to 3pm, she had already left the building.

When The Oil Is Gone

The government of Dubai knew about it 18 years ago. Saudi Arabia found out 12 years ago and they both did something about it.

American scientists and the American Government knew about it 30 years ago and did nothing about it!

In the 1970’s, America discovered what it would be like, not to have petroleum products. Long lines waiting for gas. Only allowing the purchase of 5 or 10 gallons at a time. It was at that time the light went on and some very smart and not so smart people figured out, the oil could run out.

The 1970’s oil shortage was a sham put on by the oil producing countries (OPEC) to flex their newly found muscles. They flexed and we began to pay attention. Brazil as a nation almost came to a stop in the 1970’s and their government made a decision to produce local gas-ahol. Over 90% of Brazil is using it today and with no major changes to vehicles they import and any pollution they may have, is not from vehicles.

Today, almost everyone knows about the Palm Tree Islands being built off the coast of Dubai, along with a dozen other major enterprises that will allow tourism and housing for millions of people.

Saudi Arabia is constructing an entire city (250 square miles) in the desert for housing and tourism as well. Why? Because oil supplies are running out.

At one time our American government assured everyone that oil production would not slow down until at least 2050. But they did not think that China and India would be adding two billion people into modern society that would also share in the use of petroleum products. Now it looks like it will not only slow down but be scarce by 2020!

The oil producing countries are planning ahead by building the infrastructure of new cities and new industries. America has built new cars, new corporate pay scales, new taxation plans, new political spins… And while they should have put $10 Billion into local highway hydrogen fuel stations to promote car makers to produce them, instead of trying to spend $10 Billion on a bridge to an island in Alaska!

Should the government build and operate fueling stations around the nation? If it will turn around our use of petroleum… YES! They can sell the fueling stations to American fuel suppliers later on as a profit. Our government should be leading our nation into the future and if they have to step on a few capitalists toes to do that, So Be It!

Tuesday at the Bistro

On Tuesday, May 6th, 1930 hrs, we stop in at the Bistro on Seminole Blvd, in Pinellas County, Florida. About 14 patrons are present, with maximum seating of over 100. A table of 8 with three generations of family is at a double table. The rest of us are scattered including a couple in the outdoors seating area.

We sit at the bar, Bert is behind it and takes our drink order. We select from the menu. This is not the place you would take the spouse and two kids, unless $60+ is in your budget.

Bert is quick and sharp and needs a much bigger audience for his routine, but not this night. Now on our second round of drinks and 26 minutes after placing our food order, we question whether or not it will come prior to ordering our third round of drinks! There was no big “To Go” order and only one new customer arrived while we sat at the bar.

Twelve minutes later our food arrived. Our meals consisted of a chicken sandwich and a burger rare. The burger came with a side of spicy pasta (should have been called a ‘taste’ of spicy pasta as it was piled in a dish that only held two ounces of food, think extra order of ketchup size).

The food was very good. We are told the speed of service is faster and prices lower during lunch and a happy hour that ends at 1845 hours!

The Bistro is located near one of the Saint Pete College Campus’s and probably caters to that crowd. If they want to fill their seats, they should consider changing their menu and prices to entice a different crowd in the evenings. Or in order to save money, they could just close down on Tuesdays after happy hour! There are a lot of places to go in that area.

Blue vs Red or Black vs White?

On the internet and TV, they use the color blue to show democrat states and red for republican. But now there are a whole lot of stories and sound bites where black people say they are going to vote for Obama to support the black people.

Latinos are thinking ahead and figure if they can get a black person in the white house in 2008 then maybe they can get a Latino in as well.

So should white people only vote for white people to show their support? How about yellows and reds? Whatever happened to; “For the Good of our Nation?”

How about that democrat who said; “Ask Not, What Your Country Can Do For You… Ask, What You Can Do For Your Country!” It seems if blacks will only vote for a black, just because he is black and they have no other reason for it, what are they doing for “Their Country”?

Obama may have played the ‘black’ card a lot in his life, but he has never lived the ‘black’ life and the only ‘black’ community he would fit into is at the United Nations.

If the color of his skin is the only commonality he has with black people, then we would not be doing our jobs if we did not point out that Short People should demand a “Proper” candidate for office. Their bumper sticker could read; “Trust No One Over 5’ 7”!” We could mention handicapped persons, but they already had their 4 terms!

We saw an interview with a white senator who is endorsing Obama and called a press conference to do so. After listening to the senator say that “Obama was an excellent and powerful senator doing so many things for America”. The reporter asked the white senator to name something that Obama did as a senator for America.

As the senator tried to spin his way away from the question, the reporter was persistent and asked it a total of 4 more times. The senator finally stated that he could not recall anything at the moment.

So what happened to American minds? Do we vote next time for the person who is wearing the best hat? In Italy they have voted for and placed prostitutes in their parliament because they had great Assets. (Yeah, yeah, we know what you are thinking, we already have them in office, but this publication will take the higher ground and make no mention of it at all!)

So if it does something good for you, it’s okay and if it is a hardship for you but good for the Country, you vote against it? And the current thinking is; ‘If it’s black it is good and if its white is isn’t?’

Pardon us for pointing this out, but are you confusing yourself with the KKK? Are you doing things because of the color of a person’s skin? Are you willing to make a choice contrary to the betterment of the United States of America?

Is this because at one time you were slaves? It was said 200 years ago in 1808, that a slave had no mind of their own. They had no knowledge of the world around them. If it were not for the slave owners, they would not even have food, shelter or clothing. Slaves cared not for the future, only the now. They had more children then they could care for and others had to raise those children.

Don’t look now but until you can start thinking for yourselves… You are and will always be slaves! It does not matter what color or religion you are, you are a slave to someone else’s thoughts or whims!

Telling yourself that you were held back by someone other than yourself, is again someone whispering in your ear.
